Hindcast reconstructs a workday from the applications and windows you work in, so that you can review it and bill it. It is built so that the record it makes does not leave your Mac by itself: there is no account, no sync, no analytics and no advertising.

What is kept on this Mac

Hindcast stores everything it knows in its own database on your Mac:

  • applications you use;
  • window and document titles;
  • browser domain, if you allow it;
  • when each of those changed;
  • the clients, projects, rates and rounding you enter;
  • the work you review, and the timesheets you export.

Nothing in that list is uploaded anywhere.

What is never recorded

  • screen contents;
  • keystrokes;
  • full web addresses or page contents.

Hindcast takes no screenshots, does not read the clipboard, and contains no analytics, no tracker and no third-party SDK.

What leaves this Mac

Two kinds of request leave the Mac, and neither carries anything about what you did.

  • License activation and checks. These send your license key, an activation id generated for this Mac, and the version of the app — three fields and no others. The answer is signed, and the app checks the signature against a key built into it. The app asks at most once every 30 days, and keeps working for 30 days without a network.
  • Update checks. These ask our server for the newest version, and carry the version of the app that is asking.

Our web host keeps ordinary request logs for the download and the update feed, as any web server does.

Your controls

  • Keep history — Settings ▸ Privacy & Data sets how long activity is kept: until deleted, or 30, 90 or 365 days.
  • Export All Data… — writes everything Hindcast holds into a file you choose. It works whether or not a license is active.
  • Delete History… — deletes activity for a date range you choose.
  • Delete All Activity Data… — deletes everything, and cannot be undone.
  • Deactivate This Mac… — releases this Mac’s activation, so the license can be used on another Mac.
